[347] text about him. I do not know who wrote it,

but it was perhaps my aunt Ann. It was written about 1945. My grandmother Ella Mae Toland McDonald (b. 1878) lived until 1965 and was exceedingly lucid and talkative throughout the 1950's so she was probably the source of the information. The
papers I have are pre-Xerox copies.

Boyhood spent on plantation of 2500 A. of land, located on the Tombigbee River, well stocked with slaves. Bought during Van Burens administration from U.S. Gov. for 12 1/2 per acre. The house was partly log & partly timber cut from the
plantation with what we now call a breezeway with built-in closets, then called wardrobes. The kitchen & dining room was off from the main part of the house Cooking was done on a huge fireplace. At night they used pine lighters and candles for
light.

Every night & morning the family was called together for family prayers. The Bible was read by the father. He's school house was a log school, built on a part of [last three words were struck through] the plantation by his father, where every
one young & old attended in one room. Every one studdied [sic] his or her lesson out loud. Webster's blue back speller was used by the smaller pupils & the larger ones used the dictionary. The teacher was named McGorquedale who came into
Alabama from Georgia. One morning the teacher came to announce that he had enlisted in the Confederate Army. The school closed, every boy old enough enlisted. Grandpa [i.e. JFT] enlisted in '63 when he was only a few months over 15 yrs old He
served with the 22nd Alabama volunteers, Army of Tennessee under Joseph E. Johnston & Thomas B. Hood in the Tennessee campaign against Sherman. They crossed the Tennessee river bare footed on the ice. He was in The Battle of Peach Tree Ridge in
Atlanta when it was fired by the Yankees. They stacked arms behind the court house [unreadable word] Greensborough N.C. when they heard that Lee had surrendered. At the age of 19 years he had been in 26 Battles. (On returning home he found
everything in a chaotic condition) [parenthesized part crossed out] Now the problem was getting home to Alabama from North Carolina, He and a comrade walked with the exception of about 6 miles rode on a freight train in Georgia. When he started
South for home his pants and shoes were fairly good but when he arrived home about all that was left of them was the lap and waist band of the pants. The shoes fell by the wayside miles & miles before reaching Alabama. He arrived home in the
middle of the afternoon. The first to see him was the old Negro mammy Cynthia who took care of him while he was an infant. It was she who built the fire around the wash pot in the yard for hot water for a bath. She also gave him a haircut. When
night came, he was given the best bed in the house. It was a sad home coming. His older brother fell at Chicamaugua. His mother had died and his father had married a young woman. He staid [sic] at home & tried to run the plantation. Six years
later he married his boyhood sweetheart [i.e. Harriet Freedonia Hutchinson]. Two years later they started for Texas with a small daughter, in a wagon drawn by oxen that he had raised on the plantation. He sold the oxen & wagon in Hazelhurst
Miss. & took a steamer at New Orleans to finish their journey. They settled in Falls & McLennan Counties where they reared their family. He & his wife passed on about 15 yrs ago at Ft. Worth Tex. [i.e. this was written about 1945.]
