Ron Brewington

Ron Brewington is the former Los Angeles bureau chief for American Urban Radio Networks, the nations' largest urban contemporary radio network. Brewington served in that capacity for over 17 years, during which time he covered numerous stories, including both O.J. Simpson trials, Rodney King trial, LA riots, Democratic National Conventions (1980 and 2000), 1984 Summer Olympics and other major news events.

Brewington also covers the entertainment scene, reporting from events such as the Academy Awards, Grammy Awards, Soul Train Music Awards, American Music Awards, Emmy Awards, Billboard Music Awards, Golden Globe Awards, NAACP Image Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, BET Awards and others.

His movie reviews are seen regularly in national and international newspaper and television ads. He currently writes film reviews, previews and conducts interviews for "Screen Scene," a syndicated radio features program; writes theatre, concert and film reviews and a weekly column for the "LA Community Spirit" and a monthly column for "Black Talent News." He also currently co-hosts "Minute By Minute," a community television program. He previously wrote movie previews for "TV-Online" magazine; an entertainment column for "Crisis" magazine; theatre, concert, film reviews and a weekly column for the "LA Watts Times" and interviews for "Player's" magazine.

Brewington has also worked as an Anchor/Correspondent for KJLH-FM, Los Angeles; Correspondent for KGFJ-AM, Los Angeles; Anchor/Reporter for KLON-FM, Long Beach and several other radio stations around the country, including KKFX-AM, Seattle, Washington; KEXX-FM, Corpus Christi, Texas and KEYS-AM, Corpus Christi, Texas and was a television news reporter at KRIS-TV, Corpus Christi, Texas

Brewington currently works as a news/entertainment stringer for Associated Press Radio Network. He previously worked as a news/entertainment stringer for United Press International Radio Network and BBC Radio.

The former New York City resident is also the President of B&B Productions, Pyramid Productions, Silver Dollar Productions and Ron Brewington Productions. The firms have produced the highly popular 3-hour radio tribute to singer Marvin Gaye, called "Marvin Gaye: Pride & Joy," and other nationally syndicated programs: "Labor Day Soul Jam," "King: Celebration of the Man and his Dream," "Back To The Roots: A Soul Music Celebration," "Merry Soul Christmas" as well as short programs, i.e., "Screen Scene." He also currently writes, produces and hosts the 2-hour "R&B Superstar Series."

He has been heard as the voice of the NAACP Image Awards, Heroes & Legends Awards, NAACP Theater Awards, Hollywood Black Film Festival and Black Talent News Awards. He also does voiceovers for community and civic organizations.

Brewington also voices commercials, i.e. "The Lion King," and documentaries.

He has appeared in several movies, including "Harlem Nights" and "Street Wars" and also the recent NBC television special event, "Roots, Celebrating 25 Years."

As the result of a worldwide campaign, Brewington was instrumental in getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for the late Motown Records singer Marvin Gaye. He was also responsible for getting a star for the Temptations, the Four Tops, the Supremes and many others. He was also instrumental in getting the Funk Brothers inducted onto the Hollywood Rock Walk, and was named an "honorary Funk Brother."

His Marvin Gaye tribute radio program was inducted into the Motown Museum (Detroit) {1988}, California Afro-American Museum (Los Angeles) {1988}, UCLA Radio Archives (Los Angeles) {1988}, U.S. Library of Congress {1989} and the Museum of Radio and Television (New York) {1998}.

He has stepped into a personal endeavor and was the Executive Producer of the highly acclaimed and riveting stage play, "The One," starring Dasch Hadu, which ran for six weeks at the Inglewood Playhouse and one week at the Los Angeles Theater Center. Other stage projects include: "Hearts, Souls And Other Matters," as Executive Producer and "What's Going On" as Associate Producer. He also served on the Board of Directors of the New Dragnet Theater in Inglewood, California.

Brewington currently serves on the Board of Directors for Towne Street Theatre (L.A.'s premiere African American theatre company), the Advisory Board of the Hollywood Black Film Festival and the Press Planning Committee for the annual "Heroes and Legends" Scholarship Dinner.

He also currently serves as Hollywood Coordinator for the Sudan Campaign, a coalition of Sudan anti-slavery organizations who engage Hollywood in ending the human rights travesty that has endured in Sudan for nearly 20 years.

Brewington currently serves on the Nominating Committee for the NAACP Image Awards, a distinguished position he has served with other industry professionals and National NAACP leaders since 1996.

He currently serves as the Executive Director of the Los Angeles chapter of the Motown Alumni Association, a gathering of former and present Motown employees, associates, musicians, producers, etc.

Brewington also shares his experience in the role as an educator, teaching broadcasting and journalism at various educational locations in the Los Angeles area, including Columbia College, Los Angeles Broadcasters, Columbia School of Broadcasting (Seattle and Los Angeles) and a current position as an adjunct professor at Santa Monica College. He's also a member of Media Industry Advisory Board at West Los Angeles College.

Brewington is a retiree of the U.S. Navy, where he served as Station Manager and News Director at Navy Broadcasting Service Detachments (Armed Forces Radio and Television Service affiliates) at Adak, Alaska; Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory and the USS New Jersey (BB-62).

During his tenure in the Navy, Brewington also served as the Assistant Public Affairs Officer, Naval Air Station, Corpus Christi, Texas; Public Affairs Officer, Naval Support Activity, Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory; Public Affairs Officer, Navy Recruiting District, Seattle, Washington; Assistant Public Affairs Officer, USS New Jersey (BB-62) (the first battleship recommissioned by President Ronald Reagan) and Public Affairs Officer, Naval Station, Long Beach, California.

Brewington holds a Master of Arts Degree (Communications) from Harrington University, London, England (1999), a Bachelor of Arts Degree (Broadcast Journalism) from California State University, Long Beach (1987) and a Professional Designation Certificate (Journalism) from the University of California, Los Angeles (1985).

He is a member of: Hollywood Press Club, Radio & Television News Association of Southern California, Broadcast Film Critics Association, American Federation of Radio and Television Association (AFTRA), The Greater Los Angeles Press Club and Armed Forces Broadcasters Association (Past President, L.A. Chapter).

Brewington is a recipient of the Vanguard Award (1998), George Foster Peabody Award (1993), NAACP Image Award (1993) and was selected as an "Outstanding Young Man of America" by the U.S. Jaycees (1980).
